The analysis of zoonotic disease risk requires the consideration of both human and animal geo-referenced disease incidence data. Here we show an application of joint Bayesian analyses to the study of echinococcosis granulosus (EG) in the province of Rio Negro, Argentina. We focus on merging passive and active surveillance data sources of animal and human EG cases using joint Bayesian spatial and spatio-temporal models. While similar spatial clustering and temporal trending was apparent, there appears to be limited lagged dependence between animal and human outcomes. Phenotypic analysis of peripheral lymphocyte subpopulations in hydatid patients.

Peripheral T-lymphocytes were analyzed in three groups of people: (1) individuals with current liver hydatid disease (hydatid patients, n = 20), (2) persons who had undergone surgical cyst removal at least 2 years previously (recovered patients, n = 9), and (3) a control group of healthy volunteers (uninfected controls, n = 13). Group 1 was subdivided according to cyst status, relapse of disease, and the presence or absence of symptoms. Percentages of lymphocytes expressing CD3, CD4, CD8, CD56, CD25, CD45RA, CD45RO, and HLA-DR were determined. ABSTRACT A discriminant technique was applied to the different serological patterns obtained by enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blotting (EITB) and by conventional immunological tests, in order to differentiate the residual antibody patterns present in healed hydatidosis from the ones present in patients with active hydatidosis. Hydatid disease is a parasitic disease considered endemic in many parts of the world such as South America, Middle East, Africa, Australia and the Mediterranean regions. Liver and lung hydatid disease accounts for 90% of all echinococcal cysts. Multiple pulmonary and multivesicular interatrial septum hydatid cysts in a native italian patient

Multivesicular, pulmonary and cardiac hydatidosis are rarely observed and can give rise to serious complications. Cysts can remain asymptomatic for a long time, until they reveal themselves perforating into cardiac chambers and/or pulmonary arteries or the systemic circulation. A rare case of multivesicular interatrial septum hydatid cyst with multiple pulmonary involvement in a native Italian farm labourer is reported. Clinical, radiological, serological and histological findings are described. Hydatidosis of the Central Nervous System in South America

In this chapter, we reviewed the epidemiology of cystic hydatidosis in South America, especially focusing on hydatidosis of the central nervous system. Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis are the most frequent species in humans. Hydatidosis is endemic in several Latin American countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay. The global occurrence of hydatid cysts of the central nervous system is uniformly low, with a reported incidence of 0.9–2.1 % of all cases of hydatidosis.
